Cursor

Cursor reads project rules from .cursor/rules/*.mdc files. Engram writes .cursor/rules/engram.mdc with valid frontmatter (alwaysApply: true) and a bootstrap instruction block.

Install

engram link cursor

Files written

FilePurpose
.cursor/rules/engram.mdcProject rules with alwaysApply: true
.cursor/mcp.jsonMCP registration (type: "stdio")
.cursor/rules/engram/<id>.mdcOne generated rule per workspace memory with applies_to (alwaysApply: false, comma-joined globs); working-tier memories are never written
.cursor/hooks.jsonsessionStart hook
.cursor/commands/engram.md/engram slash adapter

Global install

engram link --global cursor

Engram creates a local plugin at ~/.cursor/plugins/local/engram/ containing the plugin manifest, rules, skills, commands, MCP config, and hooks.

Runtime-first target

Cursor is a runtime-first target. Project rules contain short bootstrap instructions that rely on MCP tools and hooks for detailed protocol; the companion guide carries the full write/approval workflow, and the Agent Skill file is a short pointer to it.

Hook behavior

The sessionStart hook injects Engram startup context through the additional_context output field. beforeSubmitPrompt is allow/block-only and is not used for context injection.

Export format

engram export --format cursor-rules writes .cursor/rules/engram.mdc with description and alwaysApply: false frontmatter. It replaces cursorrules, which stays an accepted alias for one release and prints a deprecation note on stderr. live_sync.targets uses the new name.
